death, doom, destruction

a cousin of mine died this past week, without much warning at all. which prompted jet and i to have a really nice conversation on the meaning and fragility of life. i wonder what it is that makes us think that we will live exceptionally long lives. people make fun of my generation, saying that we think we are indestructable. in a way, i think that is true, as well as a positive thing. it is good to be able to go through life without fear of death, to make decisions for the long haul, and to take wild risks; but i think it is problematic for us to live in escapism from the reality that death takes us all, and that there is often no warning or “good reason” in our eyes of the reason for it.
